What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects the musculoskeletal system, and it’s the most common in the United States. The symptoms can feel quite basic such as join pain and fatigue, anxiety, reduced sleep, chronic headaches, and stiffness.

With such a wide variety of symptoms it should come as no surprise that there is no cure or specific treatment for fibromyalgia. Instead, physical therapists will work with you to address individual symptoms as they affect you.

Doctors might also prescribe medications like antidepressants and analgesics to help ease you through the symptoms of fibromyalgia. But, some of the best relief will come from an exercise plan developed with your physical therapist.

Physical therapists will help you to strengthen muscles strategically to take pressure off of joints that are suffering from pain. Heat, ice, and ultrasound therapy might also be employed to give at least temporary relief from the problems caused by fibromyalgia.

If you have been suffering from a change in moods along with pain in your muscles and bones, fibromyalgia might be the cause. Your doctor of physical therapist will be able to give you the necessary comprehensive examination to diagnose this condition and then help you develop a plan for moving forward.
